Visible from Missoula, Stark Mountain is the high-point in the Ninemile Mountain Range at 7,352′. Combined with Ch-Paa-Qn to the North, Stark Mountain is one of the gates to the Ninemile Valley. From its summit you can see at least seven different mountain ranges on a clear day. For this reason Stark Mountain is home to a fire lookout on the National Historic Register that remains active to this day.
This single-day Alpine Running Guides tour climbs from just above the Ninemile Valley to the Summit of Stark Mountain before returning to the vehicle for a trailhead picnic. Along the way we will climb from a creek bottom, through forested terrain, a few alpine meadows, and ultimately reach the summit right at treeline. From there we will be rewarded with the incredible views for which Stark Mountain is known.
The trail up Stark Mountain is fairly well maintained and is not “incredibly” steep. There is still significant climbing, however. We will not be aiming for any speed records though and will be pausing frequently for picture opportunities (picture taking is also a great time to catch your breath!). We do recommend that you have completed a 10-15 mile run before joining us on this trip. Please call us to see if Stark Mountain is the trip for you!
