Vigilante Trail

Montana celebrates its rich vigilante history. Back in the gold rush days when Montana was a backwater of the Idaho territory, the law didn’t reach into a lot of the mining camps. Vigilantism arose to help protect the interests of those outside the reach of the law. When the law became the problem in Alder Gulch the most famous bunch of Montana Vigilantes got to work. By 1864, 20 people of the infamous Plummer gang were chased down and hanged by the Vigilantes all over Central and Western Montana.

The Vigilante National Recreation Trail is just one of many modern objects playing off the ‘vigilante’ moniker. For Alpine Running Guides it serves as an excellent trail addition to our running lineup. Located in the Helena National Forest, this trail brings a different feel than most of our other tours because of the geology of the Big Belt Mountains. Here the Missouri river cuts through the West flank of the mountains and has carved incredible rock formations into the precambrian mudstones throughout the eons.

This is an out-and-back trail run to an incredible view point overlooking the area. It is a challenging little trail run that climbs up to 7,000′ in just over 4.5 miles, but the views are worth it! Like all trails in the Big Belts we will have the chance to see deer, elk, bears, and other wildlife.

Mileage-wise this is a shorter trip, but with the elevation change we rate it moderate to challenging. We recommend that you are able to run at least 10 miles continuously before joining us for this guided adventure. Keep in mind that all of our tours are mellow and laid-back when it comes to pacing. We like to take our time! Please contact us to discuss if this trip is a good fit for you!
