Western Montana

Trail running in Western Montana boasts an incredible mix of alpine tundra filled trails mixed with verdant mix conifer forests and high alpine lakes. There's always a chance rare wildlife sightings as you run along trails that just scream "WILDERNESS!"

July 17 - July 20

July is prime mountain running time in Montana. Trails are melted and the flowers are on full display up high. Huckleberry patches fuel miles in the middle elevations, and lakes are warm enough for mid-run dips.

Hot Springs Lodging

After each run we'll return to Quinn's Hot Springs, a small resort nestled alongside the Clark Fork River near St. Regis, Montana. We'll be staying in duplex style cabins that's the perfect blend of rustic feel and luxurious comfort. Did we mention the hot springs? There will be plenty of time to soak in the hot springs, sit back and read, or simply stare at the river as you prep for the next days' run.

4 Days of Trail Running

Montana Backcountry Itinerary

Here's a what your life will look like for your four days of trail running in the mountains.

Day 1 - Arrival Day

Day 1: Arrive in Missoula and get picked up in the Alpine Running Guides van to shuttle to Quinn's Hot Springs. After a quick change we'll hit the trail near the resort for a glorious 10 mile run along the Clark Fork River. Then a dinner with your new trail running friends.

Day 2 - Endless Ridgelines

DAY 2: Wake-up, eat a light breakfast at the resort, then head out in the shuttle for a 22 mile point-to-point run along the spine of the Montana-Idaho border in the Northern Bitterroot mountains. This backcountry trail is the reason we offer this trip. It's big, it's out there, and it's gorgeous. Following the run we'll have some time to soak aching legs in the hot springs before heading out for dinner.

Day 3: Mountains
and Lakes

DAY 3: Another light breakfast before adventure run day! Today's 12ish mile trail run will bring you over the top of a mountain and by four lakes that are perfect for jumping in. And we will have plenty of time for mid-run swims. This run will be in a different mountain range for Friday's run and offer a bit of a rockier feel up high. After the run we'll find huckleberry milk shakes, spend some time along the Clark Fork River, and catch and early dinner in town before heading back to the hot springs.

Day 4: Reflect

Day 4: After an early breakfast we'll head out for a short trail run up to the top of waterfall overlooking the Clark Fork River. This trail shows off how lush some of the lower mountain canyons can be, and is typically cooler on those hotter summer days. After the run we'll shuttle back to Missoula for departure after a weekend well-run!

What our guests say:

"Having done numerous Alpine Running Guides trips I can highly recommend them. Forrest is the consummate professional and not only is an outstanding runner in his own right, he has the ability to make you feel at ease on the trail whether you’re running an 8 or 12 minute mile pace. I honestly have never met anyone who truly enjoys all aspects of trail running

Patty, L

"The views, the laughs with Sara and Forrest, and even some trail running tips along the way make the entire experience more than worthwhile. We will definitely be back!"
